Former U.S. Senator Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) has died. The Village Voice in New York City has said of his death, “The unrepentant defender of unnatural causes died today of natural causes.”

Helms built a career on racial politics, battling Communists, attacking the GLBT Community, most of his fellow Democratic colleagues, and the occasional fellow Republican during 30 conservative years in the U.S. Senate. He died on the Fourth of July at the Jesse Helms Center at Wingate University in North Carolina. “Compromise, hell! … If freedom is right and tyranny is wrong, why should those who believe in freedom treat it as if it were a roll of bologna to be bartered a slice at a time?” Helms wrote in a 1959 editorial that foretold his political style. In 2005, Helms told the Associated Press, “My legacy will be up to others to describe.

I think Sir Winston Churchill said it best, “He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” At that I shall stop. I bear no ill will towards the man. I disagreed vehemently with him as he attacked in life everything I hold dear. However, in death, eternal peace grant unto him. From dust to dust, ashes to ashes, he returns as we all will in life.
