Obama Running Mate Watch – UPDATE

It is subject to change, however, according to the many reported “leaks” and by comments by some of these individuals themselves, this appears to be the shortlist for Barack Obama’s running mate list.

Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia, Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas, U.S. Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut, U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards of Texas, former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia, U.S. Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa.

* Kaine helps Obama because he comes from a key Southern state, is Roman Catholic, and was a Catholic missionary to Latin America. He speaks fluent Spanish and was an early and enthusiastic backer of Obama.

* Sebelius was an early endorser of Obama and is from Kansas, while her father, John Gilligan, is a former Governor of Ohio. She is a fiscal conservative and of course a woman.

* Dodd is Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusett’s best friend in the U.S. Senate. Kennedy’s endorsement of Obama is the turning point that allowed him enough “street cred” to defeat Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Also, Dodd’s god-daughter, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, is one of Obama’s prominent vetters. After Dodd withdrew from the Presidential race, he endorsed Obama in a surprise move. He also has a strong relationship with the Firefighters and other blue collar constituencies.

* Edwards of Texas represents George W. Bush’s home district of Crawford Texas. Edwards, a centrist Democrat, is a natural good ole’ boy, who is an expert on defense and foreign relations issues. He has a very homespun, down home story that serves him well.

* Nunn of Georgia served as a U.S. Senator from Georgia from 1972-1996. He’s very centrist to conservative but an expert on defense and foreign policy. Former President Jimmy Carter is promoting Nunn who oddly enough defeated one of Carter’s protege’s to get into the U.S. Senate.

* Bayh has been Governor of Indiana from 1988-1996 and a U.S. Senator from that state since 1998. His father served as a U.S. Senator in the same seat from 1962-1980 and made two bids for President himself in 1972 and 1976. The younger Bayh is a conservative populist who endorsed Clinton in the primaries. He’s not the best speaker but is telegenic.

* Harkin is the true prairie populist of the party. From 1974-1984, he was a U.S. Congressman and then since 1984 a U.S. Senator from Iowa. His organization in Iowa has delivered impressively for a number of Federal and statewide candidates. In 1992, Harkin made his own bid for President and made both Clinton and Gore’s shortlists for running mates. He is a strong favorite of the blue collar voters and union voters. He’s a decorated Vietnam veteran, Roman Catholic, and has a 100% voting record with Israeli issues in the U.S. Senate according to AIPAC.
