UNITED for a UNION for Waste Management.

Sanitation workers face injury on the job and potentially death because of an unsafe enviroment. Low wages and even lower benefits but a high demand to take care of the garbage and refuse of a major metropolitan area in the deep South. Threats, intimidation, and all that goes with it.

These are the issues that brought the late Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. to Memphis in April of 1968, where he would be sadly assasinated. However, forty years later, we face the same issues here in Little Rock.

Waste Management employees are wanting to start a union. Waste Management has shamefully employed an in-house union buster and everything else to try to stop this from happening. They have even resorted to firing one union supporter (on trumped up charges) to scare the  others. But you can stand where Dr. King once stood and stand up for those who take care of removing our trash.

Tomorrow, on Thursday, July 24th, instead of having our  regular luncheon, we will be sponsoring a rally for these workers.  We will  be meeting at the Teamsters Hall, 6000 Patterson (off 65th Street in SW Little  Rock) at 3:30 p.m.  You can then carpool with other supporters to Waste Management for a short rally.  We need all of you in Little Rock to participate to show Waste Management that we  have broad support for these workers. We will also be requesting that Waste Management put Stacey Stevenson back to work  immediately.

If you don’t vote, if you don’t protest, if you don’t speak up and speak out, YOU DON’T COUNT!
