Lieberman on the “Short-List”, McCain Staffer Confirms.

The Financial Times has confirmed what this blog has speculated for months….Senator Joe Lieberman (I-Ct.) is on the short-list as a running mate for Senator John McCain (R-Az.)

As one McCain staffer has pointed out, “[McCain] loves Lieberman. And he is on the [short-]list because Lieberman has never embarrassed anyone, never misspoken. The first rule is, don’t take someone who costs you votes,” said one McCain adviser.”

For Lieberman, it would be the second chance he has at making history in becoming the first Jewish-American to be elected Vice President. Also, he would become the first nominee of a major party who was the nominee of the other major party for President or Vice President in history. Most likely, Lieberman has the chance to sheer off the moderate Democrats who would prefer a Vice President Joe Lieberman to a President Barack Obama.

For McCain, its a matter of personal chemistry. Mitt Romney, while logical as a former Governor of Massachusetts, personally wealthy, and a strong contender of McCains in the primaries just doesn’t get along with McCain. Bobby Jindal seems to have fallen flat because of the fact he appears to be too young and the fact that he didn’t stop a runaway legislature from voting itself a pay raise. Sarah Palin may have gotten in trouble for firing her brother-in-law when he started to divorce her sister. And Rob Portman….well thats just it….many Americans do not know who Rob Portman is. But they know Lieberman and there is still respect for him in many circles.

For Obama, Lieberman spells trouble for the ticket. A Lieberman pick might almost require Obama pick Hillary Clinton or ever the more ingenious idea, Al Gore, Jr., as a running mate. Why? To stop the internal bleeding a Lieberman nomination would cause. Also, suddenly Connecticut, New Hampshire, and New Jersey all suddenly are in play for McCain which will throw off the electoral math. Quite honestly, a Lieberman pick is trouble for the Democratic Party in the fall.

Lieberman has been discredited as a cool-aid drinker from the neocon cauldron and a bozo party flipper. He would cost McCain a large enough portion of his base for some southern states to become competitive again. This op-ed is laughable. Yeah, us Democrats are just so scared of “Joementum”.
